About

Why sew your own clothes?

I’ve loved making stuff for as long as I can remember and as a kid I knew exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up - a fashion designer!

But, the older I got, the worse my confidence became and I developed a real love/hate relationship with my body. Mostly hate.

This meant that shopping was frustrating: nothing ever fit quite right or felt good against my skin. There was lots of clothes I just didn't think I could wear. I remember starting college and my new housemate asking me why I had no jeans. I replied "jeans don't fit me" because that's how I felt.

The reality was probably that they didn't fit me in a way that I liked or was comfortable for my body. (I've recently discovered that that I'm neurodivergent & have a lot of sensory processing issues so in hindsight all those feeling makes total sense!)

The discomfort and stress around clothes continued for years - shopping was a battle: sometimes I came out on top, but mostly I felt like I really couldn't wear what I wanted. Why? Because my body was the wrong shape and size in sooo many different ways!

Eventually, the problem became too big to ignore. I became less and less tolerant of the discomfort (material and fit) and the lack of choice in the shops meant I really couldn't find anything to wear!

I also realised that I'd spent nearly 30 years being unhappy with my body when actually there was nothing really WRONG with it (and regardless it was the only one I'd ever have!)

I was time to change the script.

And to do that, I'd have to learn how to make my own clothes. So, I signed up to Mallow College of Art & Design and my sewing journey began!

On my very first day, I wanted to cry—I felt like I had finally arrived! Pattern drafting, fabric, technique, space to be creative, and the support to realise all the ideas I had in my head - I was in heaven!

It was that feeling—the joy, the self-expression, the sense of agency—that inspired me to create Sew Your Own Clothes.

My passion is to help women like you experience the same transformation as I have: to reclaim your wardrobe, celebrate your body, and make clothes that express your authentic self. Why waste your time year after year looking for the right clothes for your body when, with my help, you can make them yourself!

Sewing isn’t just a skill—it’s a powerful act of self-love and sustainability. Your body isn't the project—your wardrobe is. Let's start building it.

In a world of fast fashion and unrealistic beauty standards, sewing gives you the power to slow down, take ownership, and create consciously.
